« The angel also showed me the river of the water of life, sparkling like crystal, and coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb. On each side of the river was the tree of life, which bears fruit twelve times a year, once each month ; and its leaves are for the healing of the nations. »(Apocalypse 22).
In these verses, there is a slightly altered reprise of the great vision of Ezekiel, the river of the Temple, which we mentioned on December 11th, 12th and 13th. In fact this vision of glory of the Book of the Apocalypse is like a transposition or better still, a transfiguration of the episode of the pierced side related in John 19. So from his Side flowed blood and water, again in the pain of Golgotha, in the violence of the Passion. Here, it is in a light of glory that the Lamb, slaughtered, but definitively the Conqueror, is celebrated… And the water which flowed from his open Heart becomes here the river of Life, sparkling like crystal. Here, the open Heart of Jesus, the Source of this river of Life becomes a trinitarian manifestation : the river of Life, symbol of the Holy Spirit (see John 7), flows from the Throne of God « the Father », and from the Lamb « the Son ». What a fine preparation for tomorrow’s feast, the Baptism of the Lord !
